History

“History is usually presented as a set of facts and dates of victories and defeats, or monarchs and presidents, consigned to an unchanging past. But it’s not like that at all. History is the knitting together of rival interpretations: deliberate manipulations of the truth and sometimes alternative facts.” - Historian Lucy Worsley

Aims and Objectives:

Every student can access an ambitious history curriculum that will help students to understand how the past has shaped the current world they live in and allows access to future pathways such as journalism, law and politics. Through learning history, students learn about kindness and compassion and are resilient learners when accessing a challenging history curriculum which enables them to strive at their personal best. History at TGS will create a sense of identity for students learning about how our multicultural society within our community was created. Pupils celebrate individuals who had a significant impact on the world and study significant events that will enable them to become a global citizen. By introducing a rich and dynamic History curriculum, pupils are given experiences to enhance their cultural capital as well as giving them the skills and knowledge in history to enable them to evaluate and make judgements. A key objective at TGS is to facilitate students to articulate their learning and enhance their skills in oracy through the medium of debate, which also encourages stretch and challenge within the curriculum. Alongside this, students will be able to expand their historical vocabulary and use this to communicate ideas within their work to reach substantiated judgements.

What are pupils expected to learn:

  1. To gain a developed understanding of second order concepts; Interpretations, change and continuity, significance, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, chronological understanding.

  1. To embed second order concepts through learning of first order concepts; events, key terminology, dates, figures.

  1. For students to recognise how understanding of the past creates an evolving understanding of the present and future. “Those that fail to learn from History are doomed to repeat it”- Winston Churchill

  1. Allow students to place themselves within the narratives of History through a curriculum that follows a sequence of events in chronological order.

  1. To teach History through an enquiry led approach. Every single topic and lesson will have an enquiry for students to investigate, e.g. Should Britain be proud of her Empire? How did a sandwich cause WWI?

  1. For students to recognise where the skills in History can be replicated in other academic disciplines, such as English, Religious Education, and Sociology.
