Teaching & Learning

Intent

At TGS, our approach to teaching and learning, as an all through school, is rooted in three core values: Chances, Choices, and Culture. These values guide our educational strategies at every stage, ensuring a consistent and enriching educational experience for all students.

Chances

Our commitment to providing varied and meaningful opportunities is fundamental. This begins in the early years of Reception, where we lay the groundwork for curiosity and exploration, and extends to Year 11, where students are prepared for more complex challenges. We focus on developing skills and knowledge that enable students to excel not just academically, but in all aspects of their lives. This comprehensive approach ensures students are ready to embrace and make the most of the opportunities that come their way, both within the school and in the wider world.

Choices

Our strategy emphasizes informed decision-making for every student, recognising the unique needs and backgrounds of each individual. From our primary to secondary phase, we encourage students to engage actively in their learning journey, encouraging a sense of ownership and responsibility. This empowers them to become self-assured learners, capable of making wise choices throughout their education and beyond.

Culture

We encourage a culture of learning that values diversity and inclusivity. Across all year groups, we aim to provide access to a rich curriculum offering a wide range of perspectives. We strive to create an environment where every student feels valued, included, and supported. This nurturing atmosphere helps cultivate a sense of belonging and respect among students, encouraging them to appreciate and learn from each other’s differences.

Principles of Teaching and Learning

TGS Principles of Teaching and Learning have been established from research. In particular, the Teaching WALKTHRUs by Tom Sherrington and Oliver Caviglioni.

The Principles of Teaching and Learning are split into two groups; the first group forms the structure of all lessons taught at TGS, and the second group enables the learning process to take place effectively.  Teachers are responsible for the delivery of our ambitious, rigorous curriculum in their subject areas. In order that students are successful in acquiring knowledge, skill and understanding, teachers will design their lessons ensuring that the following components are carefully considered and well sequenced:
