“It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." - Billy Joel

Our TGS vision is to encourage a vibrant musical culture at the core of our school, fostering an environment where music is for everyone. In our belief, access to musical education is not a privilege but a fundamental right for every student. To uphold this, we ensure that every student, from reception to year 9, receives dedicated weekly music lessons taught by specialist educators.

Beyond these foundational lessons, our commitment extends to offering an array of enriching extracurricular activities, empowering students to explore and cultivate their musical talents. We strive to ensure that all students, including those supported by pupil premium funding, have access to instrumental and singing lessons. Our goal is to proactively expand this opportunity, ensuring inclusivity and access for all. Through our whole school opportunities, students can participate in primary and secondary choirs, a school band, and an annual school musical, along with many other performance chances. These pathways not only generate enthusiasm but also cultivates a vibrant musical atmosphere throughout the school.

The music curriculum is designed to be dynamic and comprehensive, introducing students to a diverse spectrum of musical styles, instruments, and technologies, after all music is our life’s soundtracks and connects us through creativity, collaboration, and joy. Our aim is for every student to identify as a musician, fostering a culture where dedication and hard work match natural talent, whilst developing lifelong skills such as discipline, teamwork, dexterity, and creativity.

We aspire to create an environment that is both industrious and inviting—a space where students can immerse themselves in learning, unleash their creativity, and find joy in their musical pursuits. Emphasizing participation, we encourage every student to take pride in their performances, fostering a culture of shared achievement.

Recognizing the profound impact of music on wellbeing, our mission is to equip our students not only with the skills to pursue further study but also with a lifelong appreciation for music in all its forms.

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  1. Perform, listen to, review, and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.

  1. Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, can have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and can have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.

  1. Understand and explore how music is created, produced, and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure, and appropriate musical notations.
