Our second idea for Learning through Play was to go fruit picking! This one was inspired by the lovely weather and the desperate need to get the children out of the house before our SENDCo stood on yet another Lego brick…
They visited Roundstone PYO (pick your own) fruit and vegetable farm just outside of Worthing @roundstone_pyo (Instagram) Entry is free and you even get a tractor ride to the vegetable and fruit fields. There are new weekly crops from strawberries to sweet corn and all are reasonably priced. They spent 2 hours picking strawberries in the sun and about 10 minutes eating them all! This was a win-win for our SENDCo’s family as they got out into the countryside, worked together to spot and pick their strawberries, worked out the weight and price of their haul and then got to make recipes out of the fruit later on – a full day of activities from 1 trip out.
Skills used: listening/language repetition/’pincher’ fine motor grip/numeracy. We’d give this one a 8/10 for enjoyment, learning and engagement.
